Up and Down a Creek

Aug 19, 2013 | Posted in News, Restoration Success Stories

Pennsylvania Sea Grant and Environment Erie attracted a big crowd for a free workshop on Aug. 6 about the restoration of Cascade Creek. Pennsylvania Sea Grant and Environment Erie presented the program, which included a walking tour along the creek in Frontier Park.

Such restoration efforts, to prevent silt and runoff from getting into Presque Isle Bay and then into the Lake Erie watershed, have taken on a new urgency since state environmental officials confirmed that a harmful algae bloom, which can be toxic to animals and humans, had developed on the bay earlier this month.

The creek program began at the Lake Erie Arboretum at Frontier Park Education Center. The center's educational programs for children and adults will benefit from a fundraiser in the park, ArborEat'em, Aug. 24 from 7 to 11 p.m., featuring local restaurants, foods and beverages.
