Erie recognized as a 'Tree City USA'
Erie has been recognized by the Arbor Day Foundation as a "Tree City USA" for the fifth consecutive year.
In order to be recognized as a "Tree City," a municipality must have a strong tree ordinance and host an Arbor Day commemoration, among other requirements.
In honor of Arbor Day 2011, area tree service companies once again will donate pruning services to the city. The companies have collectively provided a total of $125,000 in pruning services over the past five years.
The city also is working with the Erie School District, Environment Erie, EarthAction and the Pennsylvania Lake Erie Watershed Association to plant about 60 trees on school property in the coming weeks.
